In a world that always celebrates personal success, achievement, and self-promotion, the idea of discovering meaning through helping others might seem strange. Yet, at the center of Christianity, there is an important truth: real happiness comes not from lifting ourselves up, but from lowering ourselves to help others. Helping others, often by giving up, is not just a calling but also the road to a deeper, more meaningful life.
Scripture: Mark 10:45 & Philippians 2:3-4
Jesus gives a clear and strong invitation to change how we understand purpose in life. In Mark 10:45, He says,
“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.”
This deep statement turns the usual idea of greatness upside down. Jesus, the Son of God, did not come to be served by others, but to help them—giving His life for their ultimate good. This deep humility sets a standard for everyone who wants purpose in life.
In Philippians 2:3-4, the Apostle Paul shares this idea:
“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility, value others above your own self, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.”
These verses show the radical meaning of helping others—it’s not about personal gain or praise. It’s about seeing the value of others and putting their needs before our own. This change in view leads to a life full of purpose, happiness, and real community.
Biblical Example: Jesus Washing the Disciples' Feet (John 13:1-17)
One of the most striking examples of servant leadership in the Bible is found in John 13:1-17, where Jesus washes His followers' feet. In this moment, Jesus, the Teacher and Lord, bends down to do a job that was usually for the lowest helper. His actions break cultural norms and expectations, showing that true greatness is in being humble.
As Jesus washes the disciples' feet, He shows the heart of helping others. He doesn’t wash their feet because they deserve it or because they have earned it. He washes their feet because He loves them, and He wants to show them that true leadership is not about power or control, but about helping others with a heart full of love.
When Jesus finishes washing their feet, He tells His disciples in John 13:15,
“I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.”
The message is clear: to live as Jesus lived is to help as Jesus helped. His whole life was known by an attitude of service, from His lowly birth to His final sacrifice on the cross. He found purpose in giving His life for others, and He invites us to do the same.
Application: True Fulfillment Through Sacrificial Service
Living with purpose does not always come from big achievements or getting attention; it comes from lowering ourselves to help others. In our consumer-driven world, it’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking that joy is found in chasing our own wishes, jobs, or successes. Yet, Jesus teaches us that fulfillment is not about things or building our own empires—it’s about giving up for the good of others.
True happiness comes not from living for ourselves but in sacrificially helping others. When we decide to help, not because it’s simple or easy, but because it shows Christ's love, we align ourselves with God's bigger plans. Helping can take many shapes—whether it’s assisting a neighbor who needs, volunteering our time for a cause we care about, or simply showing kindness and care to those around us. Every act of helping, no matter how small, can be a reflection of Christ’s love for the world.
Sacrificial helping also builds deep bonds with others. It’s easy to get caught up in our own life, but when we choose to think about what others need, we create trust, love, and respect. The more we help, the more we feel the joy that comes from seeing others grow. Helping others is not only kind, but a thing that transforms—it changes our hearts, our relationships, and the world around us.
The Call to a Life of Service
The call to help others is not just a suggestion, but a command that is found throughout the New Testament. Mark 10:45 and Philippians 2:3-4 show us that helping others is a vital part of the Christian life. Jesus didn’t just talk about helping others—He lived it. And He asks us to follow His path.
Helping others is not often easy, and it’s not always glamorous. It takes selflessness, humility, and a choice to give of ourselves. But in that way, we show the very heart of God, who gave everything for us. In return, we find the deep, joyful happiness that comes from living a life marked by love, giving up, and service.
Conclusion: Finding Purpose in the Least Expected Place
The world often tells us that purpose comes from achieving greatness, gaining power, or climbing the social ladder. But Jesus shows us that true greatness is found in helping, loving, and giving ourselves for the good of others. When we help, we discover meaning that goes beyond the temporary goals of self-interest. We find a purpose that connects us to God’s eternal plan, a purpose that brings happiness, fulfillment, and deep connections with others.
In the end, helping others is not just something we do—it’s a way of living. It’s a life that shows the heart of Christ and points others to the true source of all purpose. By following His example, we discover the deep truth that purpose is not about what we can take for ourselves, but what we can offer to the world around us.

"Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also abounds through Christ." (2Corin 1:4) So we can all become counselors since Christ has shown us how to do that.
